In favourable conditions it can reach about 10–15 ft (3–4.5 m) tall if pruned moderately.
It is not ideal as a long-term container “condo” mango in many cases, due to its size and need for space.
The origin: developed by Gary Zill at Boynton Beach, Florida. It is a seedling of ‘Springfels’ (maternal parent) with ‘Gary’ as the probable pollen parent.
Fruit description & flavour Fruit size: medium-to-large. Typical weights around 22-34 oz (approx. 0.6-1 kg) in many reported cases. Shape: broadly ovoid (egg/oval shaped) with somewhat “bumpy” or irregular skin texture. Skin colour: At maturity the skin turns a light yellowish‐green to yellow. In some coastal or high light locations a faint red blush may develop.
Flesh: Light yellow. Medium-firm texture. Typically nearly fibreless (i.e., very low fibre) and juicy.
Flavour profile: This is the standout trait. The cultivar is named for its strong pineapple-like flavour notes. The taste is described as sweet mango with a distinct tang of pineapple/citrus, firm but juicy with tropical aroma.
Ripening season: In Florida conditions this is a mid-season mango (e.g., fruiting around June–July in the referenced guide) though in other zones it may shift.
Seed type: The fruit contains a monoembryonic seed — meaning seedling grown trees will not necessarily replicate the parent variety.
Growing & care considerations Soil & site: Requires full sun and well-drained, fertile soil for best performance.
Disease susceptibility: This variety is susceptible to fungal diseases such as anthracnose and powdery mildew, especially in very humid, poorly ventilated, or high-moisture conditions.
Pruning & maintenance: Because of the open-spreading habit, annual or periodic pruning can help keep size manageable and allow light penetration for fruiting.
Fruit drop/bruising: Because of the comparatively large fruit size and weight, fruits may bruise if allowed to hang too long or if they fall; so some growers pick slightly early when mature but firm.
The Pineapple Pleasure mango is a truly remarkable tropical variety, bred by Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida, and prized for its exceptional flavour and eating quality. The tree grows with a moderate vigour and develops a spreading, open canopy, making it suitable for backyard orchards in warm subtropical climates.
Fruit: The fruit are medium to large, typically weighing around 600 g to 1 kg each, and have an ovoid shape with slightly bumpy skin. When mature the skin turns light yellow-green to golden yellow and may develop a soft blush in sunny or coastal sites. The flesh is light yellow, nearly fibreless and very juicy — with a smooth, creamy texture.
Flavour: What sets this mango apart is its flavour: a lush mango sweetness balanced by vivid pineapple and citrus notes. The aroma is fragrant, the acid-sweet balance bright, and the overall experience tropical and memorable.
Growing: Pineapple Pleasure thrives in full sun in well-drained soil. While the tree is manageable in size for a home garden (with appropriate pruning), it is somewhat susceptible to fungal diseases such as anthracnose and powdery mildew, so air-circulation and disease-management are recommended. Fruits ripen mid-season (in the Northern Hemisphere around June–July) and should be harvested when colour break and slight softening begin — fully ripe fruits are best enjoyed fresh.
Highlights:
Unique pineapple-mango flavour profile
Fibre-free, juicy flesh – ideal for fresh eating
Attractive golden fruit with potential blush
Backyard-sized tree (with care)
Note: As the seed is monoembryonic, propagating from seed will not guarantee identical quality; grafted trees are recommended for true cultivar characteristics.
