As a mature tree, in favourable tropical conditions the tree can be large: often about 12 m (≈40 ft) in height in Florida examples, and in more tropical zones may exceed 18 m (≈60 ft).
Some sources note heights of 15-45 m in optimal tropical forests.
For more modest horticultural/ornamental plantings (including seedling trees, especially in non‐tropical zones) you’ll often see smaller mature sizes quoted, perhaps 6-8 m or more, but this depends on climate, pruning, rootstock etc. Example: Australian nursery lists “grows up to 10 m+”.
Width / canopy: The tree tends to have a spreading form; width may be similar to height depending on space and pruning.
Growth from seed: Seedling trees take longer to fruit (often 7 + years) compared to grafted trees (which might fruit in 3–5 years in ideal conditions) because the species doesn’t always come true‐to‐type from seed.
The fruit is medium to large, often about 8 to 25 cm long (roughly 3-10 inches) and 6 to 10 cm in diameter in many cases.
Shape: Round to oval or oblong; sometimes pointed ends.
Skin: Thick, woody/semi-rough, brownish with a textured “sandpaper” feel.
Flesh (inside): Colours vary from orange, salmon, red to reddish-brown. Soft, creamy, dense, low fibre in good selections.
Flavor: Rich and sweet. Descriptors include sweet potato, pumpkin, honey, vanilla, apricot, nutmeg, even subtle notes of root beer in some sources.
Ripeness: The fruit must be fully ripe to eat — when ripe, the flesh yields slightly under pressure and has the characteristic colour. If picked too early, the flavour/texture suffer.
